The eighth session of the SAARC Talk Series 2024 (Virtual Mode) was held on (Monday), 9th September 2024, 3:00 pm (Sri Lanka Standard Time) at the SAARC Cultural Centre (SCC), Sri Lanka. The speaker of the eighth session of the SAARC Talk Series 2024 was Prof Md. Mozammel Hoque, Dept. of Archaeology, Jahangirnagar University, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Prof. Haque delivered a lecture on the topic “Paharpur: An Early Medieval River Port of North Bengal “. The main objective of the talk was to examine the importance of Paharpur as a prominent trading hub during the early medieval period.
Though there is no historical record, Prof. Haque believes that observations based on geomorphology, river system, agricultural products, archaeological remains, political, religious and cultural flourishment, it can be assumed that Paharpur and Amair areas were functioning as an Early Medieval river port.
In support of the claim, Prof. Haque put forward the example that on the bank of the Chiri River, one of the tributaries of the Little Yamuna River there is a place, known as Chirirbandar (means a river port of the Chiri River) of Dinajpur district. The river is now dried up; however, it can be assumed that this river port might have flourished during the Early Medieval period in the upstream of the Little Yamuna River.
