SAARC International Women’s Day 2021

8^th of March is observed as the International Women’s Day globally, acknowledging the outstanding contribution of women around the world. Emergence of women’s day dates back to 1909 in New York, where the first ever women’s day was celebrated and with subsequent activism spread from different corners of the world 8^th March was adopted as the official International Women’s Day. South Asia, a region rich and diversified in culture witnesses an increasing trend in the contribution of women to the society. By doing so, women have made themselves prominent and become a transformative and promising force driving towards the success in many sectors of the region. Culture isn’t an exception from others as it is obviously accommodated by women workforce.

 

SAARC Cultural Centre, being the regional and the central partner for cultural development, has been in forefront acknowledging the exceptional contribution of women in its long breath evolution. In 2019, a cultural programme was organized at the Lionel Edirisinghe Auditorium of the University of Visual and Performing Arts, Sri Lanka by inviting and recognizing three key women personal from the fields of Education, Film Industry and Administration. The programme received substantial attention from the public and appreciation for the initiative taken in this regard. It was unfortunate that the proposed event with respect to international women’s day 2020 that was scheduled to be held in Bangladesh could not be held due to the unprecedented implications of Covid-19 which still remains vulnerable to the region.

 

In 2021, a programme of non-participatory in nature will be organized by the SAARC Cultural Centre in association with the honoured member state of Bangladesh with the aim of highlighting the outstanding contribution of women in Bangladesh.
