On 8th December 1985 Heads of Governments and States endorsed the SAARC Charter in Dhaka, Bangladesh, establishing the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). The Charter Day celebrates the pillars of friendship, trust and understanding, to promote the welfare of the people of South Asia through economic growth, social progress and cultural development. The 39th year of establishment of SAARC has achieved great success in Regional Cooperation and bringing peace, harmony and unity to the Region.
The SAARC Cultural Centre celebrated the Charter on Monday 11th December 2023 with a small inhouse celebration at the Director’s office of the SAARC Cultural Centre. Mrs. Renuka Ekanayake, Director of the SAARC Cultural Centre made the welcome address and reiterated the advantages of the Regional Cooperation.
The Message by the Secretary General of SAARC H.E. Md. Golam Sarwar was read by Dr. Bina Gandhi Deori, Deputy Director, Research and the Message by the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, H.E. Ranil Wickremesinghe was read by Ms. Bindu Urugodawatte, Deputy Director, Programmes. The Message of the Prime Minister of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Hon. Dinesh Gunawardena was read by Dr. Bina Gandhi Deori, Deputy Director, Research and the Message by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Hon. M.U.M. Ali Sabry was read by Deputy Director Programmes Ms. Bindu Urugodawatte. A short video clip depicting the activities of the SAARC Cultural Centre was also shared in remembrance of work carried out by the SAARC Cultural Centre. The programme concluded with the vote of thanks being delivered by the Deputy Director Programmes Bindu Urugodawatte. Mr. Nadaraja Harishnath Programme Assistant of the SAARC Cultural Centre acted as the compere for this event.
